Wood Knobs Jewelry Holder

I’ve always wanted to try upcycling an old letterpress drawer and make it look functional. Recently, I got a hold of 2 of these drawers so I decide I would use one for placing holding jewelry.

The wooden knobs used were engraved using my laser engraver and I chose one of the more popular designs I’ve been selling on etsy.

Personalized sentiment rubber stamps

I’ve been making my own rubber stamps for about a year now and every day I think of something new I want to create. As an avid stamper, card making and crafter, I often find myself buried with paper scraps, left over craft foam and irregular shaped rubber unfit for making my standard rubber stamps.

Instead of throwing away perfectly usable rubber scraps for making stamps, I thought I would save these for my plethora of pop-up creations.

My current usage has been on personalized sentiment stamps. Stamp companies like Hero Arts and Pinkbydesigns have been making cute sentiments for years and these sentiments are useful for creating the cutest greeting cards.

I own hundreds of these stamps and (counting) just because they are too cute! But there are times when I need a sentiment specific to my occasion, my purpose and my personalize sentiment stamps are just the solution. :)

As these are small and versatile; they can be stamped on clay as well, there’s a lot of options to mark your craft with these personalized stamps.

Beautiful Upcycled Wood Mount

Beautiful Upcycled Wood Mount

Etchythings have been developing rubber stamp designs from Yoga Themed to Geekery oriented to Cute Pet Stamps for the past 2 years but customization and personalization have always been key factors in Etchythings’ success story.

My shop is filled with tiny little small stamps primarily because both price points and the style of these rubber stamps are suitable as small stamps. As an avid paper crafter, stamping an envelope, a card or a gift tag with these tiny stamps are so much fun and adds magic in your handmade pieces. I’ve also targeted my stamps for jewelry and ceramic artists who use these small stamps for their own crafts. At an affordable price point, they can use this supply of stamps over and over again on all their art pieces.

That’s not to say I can’t or won’t make larger stamps. In fact, quite the opposite!

When a customer requests a larger stamp, I usually ask the following:

* a high resolution image (so I can convert the files properly for the stamp)
* the size of the stamp
* mounting option (thicker mounts have a higher shipping cost)
* stamp usage (wood mounting option may be more suitable depending on application)

Once I have the above information, I can then choose an appropriate mount for the stamp.

When I’m working with a bigger stamp and require a large wood mount, I look for upcycling options more carefully. In all my larger pieces, I use reclaimed wood from our workshop. With the help of my handyman, we’ve kept enough wood pieces to make lots of custom wood mounts when I get an order.

I'm not bound by size. Request a custom listing for a stamp at exactly the size you want. :)

Voila! Every piece one of a kind and could be used for years to come. I thank all my customers who have bought a handmade custom stamp from Etchythings and am grateful for your appreciation and support in handmade businesses like mine.

Functional Rubber Stamps

Functional Stamps

Functional Stamps

Before becoming a stamp maker, I’ve used a lot of different kinds of stamps and tested its functionality. I’ve also watched lots of card making videos to learn how to use stamps properly. In doing so, I learned how important it is to design stamps that are functional and useful.

My business Stamp Set, for example, was designed for both gift tags and making business cards. The dimensions fit perfectly a regular size business card stock and the logo just right for a gift tag.

I knew by splitting the 2 stamps up, the end-user could change up the colors (text from logo) conveniently as well as use them separately depending on purpose.

How will you choose to spend the rest of 2012?

On December 12, 2012 by Mei

15 more sleeps until Christmas, 21 more days until NYE… and I’m not a believer of the Mayan Calendar so if anything, it will be 11 more days before we debunk this absurdity.

More importantly, how will you spend the rest of your 2012?

Etchythings time capsule:

2012 time capsule part III

After tomorrow, December 12th, 2012, I’ll temporary stop processing my orders so I can focus on being with family and friends. There’s only 21 more days till the end of the year and I still need to get/ make a few more presents, wrap them and attend several friends and family gatherings.

I think it’s important for all of us to spend time with the people around us instead of just stare at the computer all day. After all, I started this business in the hopes that I have the flexibility to spend time with those that matters most. So, I shall make it my priority.

This year, Etchythings have surpassed my expectations. It’s been so much fun making custom crafts and stamps for people from all over the world. Even locally, at the craft shows I’ve participated in this year, I did well and received recognition from yoga studios to business owners to brides-to-be.

I’m truly blessed to have such support from the handmade community and the appreciation speaks loudly to me and encourages me greatly to create more things that says, “What a geek!” “cool yogi” “awww so cute” and “wow, this is beautiful”.

Another Pinterest Worthy Idea!

I received 2 custom orders last week after posting my custom order for a pair of custom laser engraved bamboo anniversary chopsticks.

One was for a birthday:

and the other was for JSB Arts:

These chopsticks have been etched with her logo, website, email and phone number. So perfect for her ceramic bowls!

Just another great idea for usage of these chopsticks. Brilliant!

I’ve been trying to blog more consistently this year and joined a forum called “Blogging Buddies” on Etsy.

I met this wonderful individual named Kim who was very glad to feature me on her blog.  She’s an entrepreneur herself, a loving mother and her creativity are shared with her kids as well.  You’ll find her and her kids’ designs here. (hover over “here”)

If you don’t mind the time and want to give stamp making a try…

On May 22, 2012 by Mei

I came across on Pinterest an article about making your own stamps using linoleum block and cutter so I thought I might share this with you if you prefer to make your own stamps rather than shop with me. (sniff sniff)

I kid. The process itself takes a bit of time so the value of making your own stamps vs. buying is entirely up to you. :) At least this is one way of researching your products before you buy. A wise thing to do!

Rubber Stamp Making using Epilog Laser System

On May 20, 2012 by Mei

I’ve been trending rubber stamps lately and it’s a LOT of fun. I can customize stamps for myself and for people and make as big or as small of a stamp as I imagine it. Sourcing all the materials and tools took awhile because there was an initial investment for the Epilog, of course, the laserable rubber, the wood mounts and finally time to get the stamps to look just right!

Avengers Logo for the Fan in You

There’s a huge difference when a high resolution image is used compared to a low resolution image in creating a stamp. This difference works the same way as sending an image to a printing shop and expect a beautiful photo print on a low resolution file. Although it is physically possible to recreate the low resolution image and have the custom stamp look pretty close to perfect, the man power required to edit the file may result in high labor costs to the customer.

The 3 photos above and to the right show a beautiful squirrel stamp (wood mount & rubber side) and a company name & logo stamp. The image sent was of high resolution and vectorized resulting in a flawless image. Conversely, the images below show way more blemishes to the etching due to a low resolution image that required editing of layers and vectorizing. Caption included to indicate flaws.

Cat in Cup Stamps

Luckily the result after a few tries turned out great with dye ink and a little practice in stamping. But I’m sure a further edit can produce an even more deep and flawless etch. :)

A year in review…To Infinity and Beyond!

On January 6, 2012 by Mei

This year went by so fast I barely thought much about goals until October hit me face on with birthdays, Halloween, Christmas and New Year Eve!
Last year, after I received the gift of arts & crafts, I started card making, jewelry making, mix media arts etc. AND for the first time in my life, I became a shopaholic in paper crafts… but I also opened 2 Etsy stores that is growing and building reputation.

Paper Storage Solution

I also got back online: starting with Facebook and Twitter. I haven’t been active on Twitter until September of last year (3-4 months ago) and decided to commit myself to tweeting everyday and watched my followers grow from in the 50s to over 163 unique followers. It isn’t much but my Klout score also gone up to let me know how I’ve been doing.. The growth of socializing on these sites led to people finding me and viewing my websites. I’ve got @dennispang, @kcclaveria, @susanjarema and @artfire to thank for providing me with info on social media and SEO. Please follow them or visit their website.

Social Media Influences

Although social media play a key role in the development of my online presence, I must not forget why I got back online in the first place. To digress a bit, one of the reasons why I left social media was because I did not want to sit in front of a computer all day long chatting on cyber space. My life revolves around the people I love and if I stare more into a computer than those around me, I think there’s something wrong. If I sit more than being more active then I’m not fulfilling my goal to be healthy. There’s also a pressure of fulfilling what others expect of you like updating them with your every moment and activities you’re involved with. That shouldn’t dictate my life.

Hence in writing this review, I began to think more about the important things to focus on this year, EVERY year or New Year’s Resolutions (if you want to call it that):

Health: Last year, my mental health improved drastically. I thought I was already a pretty healthy individual – A yoga instructor, practice Ahimsa (non-harming) and have friends and family in my life. After a drastic event that occurred middle of 2009, my mental health was in a state of turmoil. Thankfully, that was short lived and my mental strength pulled together and I have never been more healthy mentally. However, I must say with the changes, my physical health ie) immune system has not been the best. I’ve caught more viruses and colds than I have in years and that bothers me a bit. Hence, this year, I will commit to improving my immune system through more regulated cardio and super foods.

"I'm too busy..."

Another aspect of health people tend to forget, ignore or out right make excuses for is getting into an unhealthy routine. Because work gets in the way and we tend to grab the nearest and most convenient to eat food around us, it tends to be the unhealthiest choice for our bodies. More importantly still, when we’re in a hurry to eat or not think about what we’re eating, the chance of over eating increases. For me, with the recent changes of my work and sleep pattern, I’ll need to monitor my eating habits more closely. Physically healthy is one thing but knowing how your metabolism works, your stress levels and understanding your dosha will become extremely important. Especially as you get older and your metabolism slows down. Saying that you’re fat and you need to lose weight does NOT help.

I need to lose weight!

Ironically, as I’m writing this blog, I’m hacking out phlegm from a nasty virus I caught on NYE. Go figure. Sometimes the body wouldn’t let you get sick until your deadline is over and then it’ll turn up the heat and make you suffer physically for it. It’s funny how the body is so freaky smart like that.

The lesson?
Regardless of how important you think your deadlines are and who you think you need to please at the moment, your body will slow you down if it feels like you’re abusing it. The most common indicator is getting physically sick but there are other factors like gaining weight (cortisol levels go up) or having fate stop you from your “routine”.

In other words, listen to your body and stop letting external influences play the key factor in achieving optimal health. If you’re not healthy, you can’t possibly be happy. And when you’re not happy, you can’t possibly influence anyone around you to be happy.

With compassion as always, have a happy new year.
