Have you considered making your own paper?

On April 1, 2013 by Mei

I have a bucket list and one of them is to make my own paper for gift tags and scrapbooking designs.
My recycling box is pretty full and every time I look at it, I’m reminded to get going on this project.
Check out this simple video on making your own paper.

Personalized sentiment rubber stamps

I’ve been making my own rubber stamps for about a year now and every day I think of something new I want to create. As an avid stamper, card making and crafter, I often find myself buried with paper scraps, left over craft foam and irregular shaped rubber unfit for making my standard rubber stamps.

Instead of throwing away perfectly usable rubber scraps for making stamps, I thought I would save these for my plethora of pop-up creations.

My current usage has been on personalized sentiment stamps. Stamp companies like Hero Arts and Pinkbydesigns have been making cute sentiments for years and these sentiments are useful for creating the cutest greeting cards.

I own hundreds of these stamps and (counting) just because they are too cute! But there are times when I need a sentiment specific to my occasion, my purpose and my personalize sentiment stamps are just the solution. :)

As these are small and versatile; they can be stamped on clay as well, there’s a lot of options to mark your craft with these personalized stamps.

How to use your Paper Doll Stamps

Change it up with stamps in your collection.

Change it up with stamps in your collection.

Aren’t these the cuttest??? I think so! Want to know how to make these using a few stamps including existing stamps you have in your collection, a pair of scissors and some adhesive? Super easy and here’s how it’s done:

Start with a face stamp. (click on the photo below to purchase your own)

Bunny in Monkey Hoodie

In this example, I used the monkey hoodie. <= click on link to direct you to that listing too.. (optional)

Use your existing stamps to create your body

After stamping your paper doll face (and optionally your hoodie stamp), find a stash of your stamp collection (I bought all these from Michaels) and match them up with your stamped cut out.

Once you’re happy with your body selection (if you’re feeling artistic, you can draw them too, check out our inspiration here) stamp out your image and cut the body out too.

Cut the entire original stamp out and adhere the paper doll stamp over original stamp's face

Go bananas?!!! If you still remember the days when you mix and matched paper dolls together, then using this method to mix and match your stamps will be SOOOOO much fun. Because after all, we should all embrace our childhood games every now and again.

Namaste.

Ways to Upcycle your Greeting Card Envelopes

On January 7, 2013 by Mei

envelopes

It’s January, 2013… we’ve just gone through a few weeks of holiday shopping, opening xmas presents, spending time with family and friends and DUN DUN DUNNNNN…. we’ve got a pile of envelopes! A great pile of them that are pretty nice and you just don’t want to throw them away or toss it into the recycling bin just yet.

So what do we do with these??? Here are a few I’ve found online and a few I would definitely use:

* pockets for your journal – keep photos, tickets, small notes and keepsakes.
* receipt envelopes – I always keep my shipping receipts organized into months and find it especially useful when I need to follow up on an order. Your envelopes could be titled by month and year
* stamped thank you notes or crop out the area you need and make into gift tags or other paper crafts (the nice colorful or thick ones?)
* put a big sticker on it and reuse it an another envelope
* test new tools – pens, embossing folders with them
* make them into scratch pads after cropping them down

What would you do with old greeting card envelopes? Care to share?

I’ve created a nice little hand punched paw print envelope by punching the center of the flap with the paw print punch.  Lined the inside with black (or your color) card stock and adhered the card stock to the inside of the envelope flap.

So pretty!

Ink-

Dye Ink: Dries quickly, is translucent, non-toxic and washable except for archival types and works well for detailed stamps, glossy paper, and vellum.  It will fade with time and exposure.

Pigment Ink: Dries slowly, is opaque, vivid, and fade resistant.  Some varieties can be used to stamp on different surface types like wood, glass or fabric so experiment with it! Its viscosity and slower drying time make it the right choice for heat embossing with powders.

Solvent Ink: Quick drying, opaque and works well on slick surfaces such as glossy paper or a transparency or where a permanent ink is important.

Hybrid Ink: A combination of dye and pigment properties for a wide variety of applications.

Stamps-

Clear: Provide ease of image placement are cost effective and require relatively little space to store. A clear acrylic block is needed for best results.

Rubber : Provide excellent impression quality, available mounted on cling foam and requiring an acrylic block or permanently mounted on wood.  Cling foam mounted stamps are sometimes offered a large sheet that require trimming into individual images.

Care and Storage -

Stamps: Clear and cling foam rubber stamps can be placed in CD jewel cases, 3-ring binders with special insert sheets or clip and spinner systems.  Wood mounted rubber stamps should be stored with the rubber facing up to protect the stamping surface. Clean with a gentle baby wipe or water and air dry.

Ink: Should be stored with the pad surface facing down so ink remains at the surface of the pad while not in use.  Pad can be stacked to optimize space.

Designer Tips-

For accurate stamp placement, use a positioning tool. An even work surface is imperative for a solid stamping impression. An inexpensive mouse pad provide the perfect cushion under paper or cardstock to prevent an unevenly stamped image.

How to use your hybrid rubber stamps from Etchy Things

Etchy Things Rubber Stamps is constantly finding new ways to improve and create the best custom stamps for customers worldwide.

With upcycling and handmade in mind, as well as shipping options provided by Canada Post, Mei, from Etchythings uses rubber cling mounts as an alternative to using wood mounts or high shipping costs.

To use these stamps simply follow these steps:

Peel off the protective film but don’t throw it away!

1) Remove film from polymer backing but keep the film.

Cling backing onto an acrylic/ plastic block.

2) Cling polymer backing onto any acrylic/ plastic block. (Craft stores sells these blocks but any plastic block like a piece of flat lego block will work)

Ink your rubber stamp

3) Ink your rubber stamp.

Looking good!

4) Press firmly and evenly and voila!

Cleaning your rubber stamps:

I love using baby wipes to clean my stamps!

Although most will claim having ink cleaners are the best way to clean your rubber stamps, I often use baby wipes to clean mine. I also cut out small pieces at a time to conserve my wipes. A little stamp doesn’t need a big sheet. :)
Tip #1: As long as you clean gently and pretty close to right away after stamping, you won’t find much of a stain on your rubber although staining is common.
Tip #2: If you’re going to be using the same inks on the same stamp, I often just stamp out my ink rather than clean it every time. The abrasion from cleaning will eventually wear out the rubber… these will last a LOOONG time but just another tip I’ve learned over the years.
Addendum: If you use specialty inks, some will inevitably stain your stamp but it doesn’t mean your stamp is bad or it will stain your next image, it’s just the ink. Follow tip #2 and you won’t mix previous ink to your new project.

Craft Hauls 2012

On July 8, 2012 by Mei

I started crafting about 1.5 years ago starting with the Cricut bug.  Back then, I used a lot of 65# paper for all my cuts and cards.

Here’s an example of one of my first cards I made. The lamb was from one of the Cricut Cartridges. I liked the Cricuts but they were still quite expensive back then, the use of the Gypsy was pretty mandatory and the versatility compared to other cutters were not available to the Cricut. I found it also a bit too slow and the sticky mat sometimes get the better of me so I’ve shelved my cricut for about 6 months now.

I then started buying stickers and made some pretty nice cards using stickers and sentiment stamps. My collection of stickers is pretty big. I don’t have a picture on my computer at the moment to share but I do have tons and I’ll take a snap shot of it some time. (no drooling)

But my biggest love is probably stamps.  Not only have I started buying polymer stamps maker, I’m also making use of laser engraver to make rubber stamps.

The last 2 hauls here were just random crafts I’m collecting for I guess when I next make greeting cards, gift tags etc. but I’m sure I’ll be incorporating my rubber stamps in kits and other creations.

So please stay tuned!  Oh I’ll be making Christmas Countdown Calendars if you’re wondering what those packages to bottom left corner are.

Fun Birthday Gift Tags using Big Shot and Inks

I made a few gift tags today using my Big Shot Machine and a few mini embossing folders from the birthday series.
They were the perfect size for these punched out gift tags!

For embellishment, I used my silver and gold embossing inks and a multicolor ink pad to run the colors over the embossing; added eyelets and twine to finish off the tags!
