Mudita Mondays
What is the purpose of Mudita Mondays?
Mudita. [Pāli and Sanskrit: मुदित]
Simplest meaning translated is unselfish joy.
It is finding joy and pleasure through other people’s well-being rather than begrudging it. If this doesn’t make any sense to you, read on to find out why you need to change your perspective. If this makes sense to you, read on to find out how you can spread the feeling of Mudita in your life.
I particularly love this word because it describes so much of what I live for. Indeed, being truly happy for another is easier said than done because we live in a world where we judge ourselves against others a lot – not to mention the power our media has on us and particularly the younger generation. In today’s world, kids want to grow up to become famous rather than be astronauts or a President / Prime Minister. Albeit this is changing, there’s always going to be a subconscious inner-self or ego that will try to compete rather than to be happy for another.
Why you should be happy for another
Let’s breakdown the meaning of Mudita by contrasting it with words Western society knows best:
Envy:”a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else’s possessions, qualities, or luck”
Judgment:”an opinion or conclusion”
Comparsion:”estimate, measure, or note the similarity or dissimilarity between [you and the other person]”
Avarice: “extreme greed for wealth or material gain”
When we allow envy, judgment, comparison and avarice take control of our feelings, we gain dissatisfaction and contempt in our lives. Not only do we stop giving or helping others, we distort our own realities by either inwardly destroying ourselves through unrealistic expectations or we destroy others through ‘hatin’ and spreading negativity or faking Mudita until you achieve what you want. Here’s an example of struggling through feeling Mudita from a yoga instructor, Charlotte Bell. No, yogis are just human beings as well and we don’t float on mountains with our legs crossed.
Rather, Mudita, as Bell states in her writing, “helps uproot the unhappy states of envy, judgment and comparison.” Wow. That was brilliantly worded. Thank you Charlotte.
So what does that do for you without envy, judgment and comparison? What kind of person do you think you are now without these hindrances? [You fill in the blank or comment below to share.]
For me, feeling Mudita is awesome because this is one of the first key steps to world peace. It means I can focus on being a better person and support those around me through Mudita. Mudita has no monetary value but endless intrinsic value for yourself and for others. For example, do you remember the last time someone complimented you sincerely on your joy and welfare? (If you cannot recall a recent example, stop for a moment and imagine how you would feel if someone did…) That intrinsic joy becomes the foundation for Mudita.
Since this word is derived from Buddhistic philosophy in the East, it will take some time for others who are attracted to the meaning of this word to spread the love and associate with the old western song, “love is something that you give it away… [because] you end up having more.” I’m sure some harmonious souls are spreading the love in their own way but if you wanna start this too, feel free.
What you can do if you are attracted to Mudita
1) Mudita is a state of mind. It is not something you achieve and move on. If you want to feel this, you must do a temperature test every time judgment, envy, avarice or comparison creep into your mind. Buddhist philosophy or even E. Tolle calls it mindfulness meditation which in turns allows these feelings to pass you by and let go of the ego and turn on your positivity and Mudita onto others.
2) Define those people around you that you can feel Mudita for. Pay close attention to those you envy or compare to because once you let that pass, they are those whom may change your personal welfare. It may be family members, close friends or just those who are truly brilliant!
3) Try Mudita Mondays. 2 weeks ago, I started Mudita Mondays after feeling an urge to create some kindness to those around me. I’ve been exposed to Mudita since I started my yoga teacher training in 2009 and since then, I’ve always been drawn to this word. As well, my fiancé, who when asked what he wants for Christmas or for his birthday says, “world peace”. He says that world peace starts with one person and regardless of how his life experiences has taught him the cruel nature of mankind, he still wishes for it. This got me thinking about it more and more so I am starting world peace with Mudita Mondays.
On Mondays, I will be posting on my Facebook and updating here a list of people I feel Mudita for. It starts from my state of mind and I will spread it onward to first those whom are closer to me and I know and eventually spread to someone I meet online through my online store like Etsy, twitter etc. I hope by then this just catches on and brings us one step closer to world peace.
Please join me in spreading Mudita Mondays and world peace.
Namaste.

May 27, 2013 Kelvin, my cous, he’s pretty darn amazing! And I’m definitely happy for him. It’s pretty tough as it is in Hong Kong for the Performing Arts to take off let alone be a part of it for since he started over 10 years ago! Kelvin’s commitment to his passion for performing is admirable and it’s simply amazing to see him grow from my little cousin to a grown man. Mudita Kelvin!
May 20th, 2013 – In honor of Queen Victoria Day, I’d like to dedicate today’s Mudita Monday for all the strong woman out there ‘fighting’ for her freedom, her love, her passion and persevering in times of injustice and deception. May you find truth and peace.
May 6th, 2013 – Kyra’s come a long way since I first met her. Her dream of becoming a visual arts graphic artist and designer came to a halt almost 10 yrs ago when she thought she wouldn’t have the opportunity to get back into doodling and drawing. Life takes you to places that are unpredictable sometimes and she definitely wasn’t expecting what came at her. In getting to know her, I see someone who really does love to draw (and really good at it too)! She officially opened her etsy shop a few months after I introduced her to it and sold her first art piece shortly after. Her success was attributed to her passion for drawing, her desire to create good work and integrity that is unwavering. Mudita Kyra!
April 29th, 2013 – Today’s Mudita is dedicated to my friend, Shawna M. from JSB Arts. As her blog bio. and name say, she was a combat medic who became disabled during her duty and fell in love with ceramic art when she was going through therapy. Today, she has a growing number of buyers on Etsy as well as a Kickstarter program that is coming to fruition by May 12 (Mother’s Day). It’s great to know people who are (able or disabled) doing everything s/he can to create a life that is fulfilling not only for herself-but also the people around her. This Mudita Monday is for you, Shawna!
May 21st, 2012 – Mudita Monday: I’ve known Sean P. for over a decade and in that time, I’ve got to learn a lot about trust through him. From my perspective, I’ve always seen him as a younger brother who wants to conquer the world. He is intelligent, smart, philosophical, curious and great looking guy. I’m always intrigued by his ideas and his discoveries and I don’t hesitate to listen to them. Although he’s not always around to show me why he chose certain paths, I’m always happy to hear that he’s doing okay and he’s ready to make things happen again. His recent opportunities opened doors for him and I’m sure everyone around him is very proud. Sean, I want to let you know I’m very proud of you as well. Despite the trials this decade, there’s nothing better than to proof to the world that you believed and continue to believe in yourself. Mudita love!
April 2nd, 2012 – Mudita Monday: Nathan and I share the same personality traits according to the RED-BLUE-YELLOW-GREEN “4 personality types” questionnaire we completed some time ago at our previous employment. He found this fascinating! Although I do not share the same fascination, it does bring forth some key reasons for why we connect immediately. Nathan is what Einstein would say: “I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.” It’s always great to meet someone with passionate curiosity because the friendship is always filled with purpose. If there’s anything that’s holding you back, Nathan, these are my thoughts for you: “If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done.” Ecc 11:4 We miss you here!
March 12th, 2012 – Mudita Monday: Aalia C. would make an excellent mother some day. She emanates sunshine through her brilliant smile. She spreads her passion for humanity by experiencing the world rather than just reading about it in a book. Her past, present and future controlled by her life force will be the driver of her successes to come. In the short time I got to know Aalia through Toastmasters, I know one day, when she writes her book, I will read it. Best wishes to you, Aalia, wherever you are, my thoughts are with you.
March 5th, 2012 – Mudita Monday: Christine C. has been a long time friend since university. When we first met, she was reserved and unhappy because she was going through a transitional phase that hit her hard and unexpectantly. But like any other motivated and optimistic fighter, she opened up to us, changed her life style and completely embraced her new life with open arms. She’s another strong women I’m proud to get to know and be good friends now and many more years to come.
Feb. 27th, 2012 – Mudita Monday: I met Vivian over 5-6 years ago, at a fundraiser, where she herself was recuperating from an illness that could have taken her life. Of course, knowing Vivian, a positive, out-going optimist never required or asked for sympathy. Having such a strong will and compassion for others are one of many Vivian’s loving traits. I’m often inspired by her motivation and for all that she does for others. Congratulations again on your engagement and please keep in touch!
Feb. 20th, 2012 – Mudita Monday: Michelle M., a young, vibrant fire cracker, is always a joy to hang out with. She is honest, open-minded and wears her heart on her sleeve. When I met this girl, I couldn’t help but to notice her bright personality, her excitement for an adventure and that pretty smile on her face. Life might not always go your way, Michelle, but I know you will find your path and will tread on it with compassion, dignity and self respect. xoxo
Feb. 13th, 2012 – Mudita Monday: Miki Ts., an accomplished yoga instructor, started teaching around the same time I began my yoga teaching journey. At the time, I was teaching at a local martial arts studio as well as contracting and substituting work. Miki was referred to me by Olena and I felt an immediate connection with her. We spent some time chatting and shared some personal stories I find inspiring. Since then, she has shared yoga through her native language and was featured in a local Asian talk show last December. I may not always be there by your side, but always in good spirit my yogi friend.
Feb.6th, 2012 – Mudita Monday: I met Linda W. on a Facebook page several years ago when I was a tennis enthusiasts and had wanted to meet someone I could play tennis with during the summer seasons. She replied to my post indicating that I was nearby and we “hit it off” really well since. Linda is an extremely intelligent, analytical and out-going person. We get along not only because of tennis but also on a personal level in yoga, friends gatherings and special parties. Linda displays a lot of playfulness about her during our NYE party with her hubby but also show a gentle, caring side with her little one, Neo. She’s definitely another one of my most cherished friends.
Jan. 30th, 2012 – Mudita Monday: Selma S. and I have been friends since early 2000s. We both studied together at S.F.U. and had been studious and avid learners. Selma is what I would call an all-around beautiful star. She’s kind to others and always courteous but that doesn’t mean she is not assertive, driven and passionate about everything she does. She’s motivated to be a better person everyday and has a very loving hubby by her side to share her life with. I feel blessed to have Selma in my life and hope our friendship continues to grow. Mudita Selma!
Jan. 23rd, 2012 – Mudita Monday: I met Laura Phelps at YTT in Hamilton Ontario a couple of years ago and immediately connected with her energy. She is beautiful, kind, and extremely humble. At the time, she had just opened her yoga studio in Victoria and kept herself even more busy by completing a 300hr intensive program. We worked 10-12hrs a day in the classroom and after that, she would work on addressing any issue at her growing studio. This girl is not only tough in enduring and overcoming obstacles, she is also a very successful yoga studio owner. I highly recommend a visit to her Feel Good Yoga & Pilates Studio in Victoria if you get a chance to. https://www.facebook.com/FeelGoodYogaPilates
Jan. 16th, 2012 – Mudita Monday: Eric B. is a geek that you either find brutally annoying or sadistically entertaining. For me, the latter identifies me with him and I find myself wanting to get to know more about what’s inside this geeky brain. To my dismay, he is completely a sensitive, kind and thoughtful individual. He’s not just a geek; he’s a geek with layers! I am glad I got to know him over the past few years and definitely wishes him good fortune and health this 2012 year.
Jan. 9th, 2012 – Mudita Monday: There is a kind of romantic mysticism juxtapose with his search for truth which makes Iván quite the chick magnet. His attentiveness to his energy and aura are captured in photographs which helps him comprehend life. His most recent experience in celebrating new year’s was of buddhistic and zen nature. Blessed with a path of enlightenment and awakening, cheers to you Iván.
Jan. 2nd, 2012 – Mudita Monday: I met Jenien T. just over a year ago at our last Christmas party and immediately felt comfortable around her. She is an elementary school teacher by profession and loves and cares about them greatly. She is never short of company at school as her kids stay behind to help her out often. Jenien shows an appreciation for all those around her and it genuinely shows with the one month long birthday celebrations she had (since everyone wants to spend time with her). I’m truly happy to have met you, Jenien. The best is yet to come!
Dec. 26th,2011 – Mudita Monday: Doris ., my sister is on my Mudita list this week because she displays a carefree attitude I admire a lot. Since life has its ups and downs and we all go through a myriad of hardships from time to time; this women knows the key to a good life: love. With her loving husband, Henry, by her side she can overcome anything. Over the past years since she returned from HK, I have seen nothing but a kind, understanding and thoughtful person. This Mudita blessing is for you.
Dec.19th, 2011 – Mudita Monday: Bhup S. has been a friend of mine for 10yrs. He is charming, charismatic and a gentleman. A father, a romantic husband and always always looking out for his family and friends. Even though we do not often get a chance to catch up and ‘hang out’, we can always talk about anything from philosophy to our daily funnies. I’m truly grateful and honored to have him as my good friend and bless him and his family always.
Dec.12th, 2011 – Mudita Monday: David Y. is someone who is, in my mind, extraordinary. He is extremely analytical and questions the truth about everything. In a very short period of time, he took on a yogi path of living and experienced moments as it might have been described in the Bhagavad Gita scripture (in today’s world). Today’s blessing is for you David.
Dec 5th, 2011 – Mudita Monday: Today, I’d like to recognize another beautiful individual Maki K. She’s been a Japanese tutor for over 10yrs and helped many people improve and learn her native tongue. Recently, her new found love, her little black cat, Lala, keeps her company and busy. Keep up the great work Maki! xoxo
